The new physics curriculum for secondary schools will come into force in the 2024/25 school year. Physics didactics expert Claudia Haagen-Schützenhöfer from the University of Graz has designed two free Mooc courses together with her team and specialist colleagues from Vienna so that physics teachers can optimally prepare for the changes.

Two Massive Open Online Courses, or Moocs for short, are intended to prepare physics teachers and physics teaching students for the changes in the secondary level 1 curriculum, which will be implemented for the subject of physics from fall 2024. Univ.-Prof.in Dr.in habil. Claudia Haagen-Schützenhöfer Physics Didactics University of Graz and Prof. Dr. Martin Hopf from the University of Vienna have developed an online training format for the numerous innovations in the new curriculum that allows all certified and uncertified teachers to prepare excellently for the introduction of the new curriculum. Together, they also provided scientific leadership for the development of the new physics curriculum.

In the first Mooc entitled "Advanced training on the new physics curriculum for lower secondary level", physics teachers are given an overview of the most important topics in the new curriculum. It includes videos, interactive exercises and quizzes. This Mooc course comprises six lessons on the new physics curriculum and deals with the basics of the new curriculum.

Second part of the course will be published in fall 2024

The first Mooc has been online since fall 2023 and is aimed at teachers of all school types who will be teaching physics at lower secondary level according to the new curriculum. "In addition, Bachelor's and Master's students studying to become physics teachers and teachers of physics didactics are also welcome to complete the Mooc," emphasizes Claudia Haagen-Schützenhöfer.

The second Mooc course is currently being developed - again with multiple contributions from the University of Graz's physics didactics department - and will be published in fall 2024. "For the 6th grade, i.e. the 2nd grade lower school, we are already offering a preview. If you are a teacher or are studying to become a physics teacher and would like to take a look at this part of the course on the initial teaching of hearing and seeing now, then we would be delighted to receive feedback!" emphasizes Claudia Haagen-Schützenhöfer.

The preview is accessible via Moodle: Login: External; Login to 'Moodle': Login as guest.

The two Mooc courses are made available via the PH Vienna. The Mooc certificate can be credited as further training for active teachers at the PH Vienna.
